Post Race Report - Kansas
Event: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Camping World RV 400 (Race No. 29 of 36)
Location: Kansas Speedway; Kansas City, Kan.
Top-five finishers:
Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle, Jeff
Gordon and Matt Kenseth
Race recap:
Jimmie Johnson held off a furious last-lap run by Carl
Edwards to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway on Sunday.
Johnson appeared to be on cruise control for the victory until Edwards shot past him on the low side in turn three. Edwards couldn't hold the corner, drifted high and hit the wall, however, as Johnson calmly drove back into the lead for the win.
Johnson started from the pole position after fast qualifier Juan Pablo Montoya was removed from the top spot because of illegal shock absorber. He went on lead the first 16 laps, but most of his dominance occurred after the 100-lap mark. Johnson led 124 laps on the day, 108 of those over the final 160 circuits. Johnson took the lead for the final time coming out of the pits on lap 220, leading the final 48 laps on the day.
With his victory, Johnson took sole possession of the championship points lead. He currently holds a 10-point advantage over Edwards and a 30-point margin over Greg Biffle, who finished the Kansas race in the third position.
Race four of NASCAR's 10-race playoff takes place at Talladega Superspeedway next Sunday.
Companion event:
Denny Hamlin led 99 of 200 laps to win the NASCAR
Nationwide Series race at Kansas on Saturday. All of Hamlin's laps up
front came over the final 107 laps of the event. Clint Bowyer, who
finished the race in the second position, extended his championship
lead to 196 points over Carl Edwards.
Goodyear quote -- Justin Fantozzi:
"No tires, two tires or four tires.
There was an abundance of pit strategies in race No. 3 of 'The Chase'
at Kansas Speedway. Our Goodyear Racing Eagles performed very well,
and tread wear was excellent, setting teams up for the various pit
strategies."
